We've thrown open our doors for a lot of first dates over the years, and quite a few proposals. Watching those nights unfold taught us something: romance comes down to whether two people can actually talk to each other, whether the server knows when to disappear, and whether nobody's rushing out the door before they're ready to leave. Austin has all kinds of places that are perfect for a romantic evening. Here are ten spots we love, ours included, each suited to a different kind of night out.
What Makes a Night Feel Romantic
Ten years of watching couples fall for each other across our own tables has taught us a few things about what actually makes an evening feel special.
- Good sound matters more than people think. Soft walls, a lower ceiling, or music that stays in the background all give a conversation somewhere to land, making it easy for conversation to flow
- Warm light does a lot for a romantic evening. Candles and low amber bulbs are forgiving in a way overhead lighting never manages.
- The space between tables matters too. Just enough space so that the two of you feel like you're alone together
- A perfectly paced dinner, one that lets the night unfold at its own rhythm, is the kind you don't want to end.
We think about all of this every night here, and it's what we look for wherever we go too.
For a French Night: Justine's Brasserie and Le Calamar
Justine's on East 5th is one that locals love, both for the ambiance and for the food. There's escargot in garlic butter, steak frites, a bar with records spinning, tented cabanas strung with chandeliers, and an oyster bar out back.
Le Calamar on South 1st takes the same cuisine and dials it in a little tighter. The cooking is French with a Texas accent, and the room is elegant yet relaxed. Get the steak au poivre. People talk about it for weeks after.
For Mexican, Modern or Classic: Comedor and Fonda San Miguel
Comedor on Colorado Street is modern Mexican done with real polish. The dining room is captivating, with oversized light fixtures and garage doors that roll open onto the patio, and the menu features standout dishes like bone marrow tacos. Ask for the patio when the weather cooperates.
Fonda San Miguel in Allandale is another inviting spot for a night out. It's been around for decades and has a fascinating art collection: bold colors, hacienda-style architecture, and a room that invites you to linger over dinner. Order the mole enchiladas, get a mezcal cocktail, and take your time.
For Sushi That Will Have You Coming Back for More: Uchi
Uchi on South Lamar is a favorite for Japanese cooking. The dining room, tucked into a remodeled old house is a great setting for a romantic, intimate evening out. Reservations move fast, so it's worth booking well ahead of your date.
If you don't land a table, the sister restaurants, Uchiko in Rosedale and Uchiba downtown, run similar menus that are worth trying.
For Steak and Old Austin Formality: Jeffrey's
Jeffrey's in Clarksville is a classic special-occasion room, with red leather booths, dark green walls, a wood-paneled entry, and shelves of old books. Some people like to reserve it for engagements and big anniversaries, and the service is also highly praised.
Order a dry-aged steak to share and save room for the chocolate soufflé, which is worth looking forward to during your dinner. There's also a martini cart, mixed tableside on request. Weekend tables move fast, so it's worth reserving well in advance.
For House-Made Pasta and Wood Fire: Juniper
Juniper sits on East Cesar Chavez under twenty-foot timber ceilings, with a hand-painted juniper tree running the length of the wall and an open kitchen you can watch straight on from our nine-seat Chef's Counter. The cooking is rooted in a Northern Italian ethos and shaped by Texas ingredients: pasta rolled by hand, proteins finished over wood fire. Take a look at the full menu before you come in.
Grab a corner table if you'd rather have the wine list to yourselves, or reserve the Chef's Counter for something different entirely. It's a six-course tasting menu built around whatever Sterling's working on that week, off-menu and served right in front of the kitchen for up to six guests, with an optional wine pairing if you want to make a full night of it. For Gardens and Open Air: Lutie's and Lenoir
Lutie's, inside the Commodore Perry Estate off Red River, makes you feel like you're attending a garden party. The grounds are gorgeous, the service is polished, and the menu offers new dishes on a regular basis, so you'll always want to go back for more.
Lenoir on South 1st splits into two experiences: a small renovated bungalow inside, and a wine garden strung with lights under oak trees outside. The kitchen leans into what they call hot weather food, which in an Austin summer is no joke. There's a chef's choice tasting menu that always has amazing options that you and your date will have to try.
For a Long Dinner With No Decisions: Barley Swine
Barley Swine on Burnet Road serves a tasting menu and only a tasting menu, which suits date night perfectly. The dining room is warm and lodge-like, the open kitchen is visible from most seats, and the pacing allows you to enjoy your date and spend the night talking and enjoying the dishes as they come out.
A Few Things That Matter More Than Which Restaurant You Pick
- Book earlier than feels necessary. Good tables at popular spots on a Friday or Saturday can fill up weeks out.
- Consider a weeknight instead. The same kitchen on a Tuesday may be a bit more relaxed than on the weekend.
- Mention the occasion when you reserve. A quick note about an anniversary or a proposal goes a long way almost everywhere.
- Flag any dietary needs in advance, especially for tasting menus, which need lead time to cook around an allergy well.

Matching the Night to the Occasion
For a proposal, look for a place with grounds or a view worth walking before the sun goes down, and let the kitchen do the rest. For celebrating someone, a restaurant with a patio or garden or beautiful art collection can lend itself to the occasion. Get to your restaurant of choice before it fills up, order more than you need, and let the celebration take as long as it wants.

Save Us for the Italian Night
Ten years in, and we still think a great night out comes down to fit more than cuisine. We're open seven nights a week from five to ten, walk-ins welcome. Valet runs Thursday through Saturday, there's a lot about twenty-five yards from the door, and street parking nearby is free. If your anniversary's grown to include extended family, our second-floor private dining room seats fifty.
